Mud fever

WHO IS NOT FAMILIAR WITH IT? MUD FEVER

Scabs and eczema-like wounds on the leg and in the pastern joint. In wet periods many horses and ponies with have to deal with this, often for a longer period

WHAT IS MUD FEVER?

Mud fever is a skin inflammation of the pastern joint and can manifest itself in different forms. The most common form is associated with slight redness and tenderness of the skin. If the inflammation is servere it might be possible that fluid comes out of the wound and see some crusting. Should the inflammation develop further than the deeper layers of the skin also become inflamed. This is usually accompanied by an increase of soreness and crusting. All forms of mud fever can also develop higher on the legs.

TO RECOGNIZE

Mud fever can be noticed by redness, crusting, swelling of the leg, soreness and / or itching.

CAUSES

The cause of the inflammation associated with mug fever must often be sought in moisture and dirt, and therefore the creation of a skin infection. The dampness may be caused by, for example, a wet pasture or stable (urine), excessive contact with water or washing may also be the reason for the occurrence of mud fever. Also the following causes may be a reason for mud fever:

Itch mites

Itch mites disturb the natural resistance of the skin and often cause small cuts.

Sensitive skin

Skin damage resulting from caked dirt / mud, wash scouring sand or excessive washing. Also certain insects, plants or nutrients in the soil can cause damage. One horse can be more sensitive than the other. White legs / skin are more sensitive to mud fever than horses with legs. Certain breeds (cold-blooded animals) are more sensitive to mud fever

Sunburn

Too much sunlight in combination with 'irritant' substances in the diet can also create mud fever in dry and sunny periods.

Reduced resistance

It is also known that a reduced resistance makes horses more prone to mug fever. We advice to regularly provide extra vitamins to your horse, which can be in the form of a powder (ProminentLicosan Forte*), injector (Vitasporal Horse) or liquid (Vit Liquid). * Licosan Forte can be provided both over the food and the water.

TREATMENT

There are many different views on a good treatment method of mud fever.

Determine cause
First, determine the severity of the condition. If it seems serious or you just don't trust it, we advice you to consult your veterinarian.

Environment and care of your horse

It is important in all cases of mud fever to keep the horse in a clean and dry environment. Prevent moisture in the pastern cavity and dry thoroughly (always do this with a clean cloth) as they become damp after for example, grazing or washing.
